Victor Hănescu: Romanian tennis can further evolve with the help of tournaments like Dr. Oetker Junior Trophy

Victor Hănescu belives that Romanian tennis can further evolve with the help of tournaments like Dr. Oetker Junior Trophy.
“It is a very important tournament for Romanian tennis, which helps Romanian players improve their skills and find themselves among international hierarchies. A tournament very well organized by the Federation together with Dr. Oetker. I was also present at the opening of the tournament and today at the awards ceremony I witnessed a very good level of play.
I hope that my presence here helps the children and lends them confidence at the beginning of their journey. I’ve been through these moments myself, I fondly remember my first international tournaments, when I was very keen on seeing the popular players.
The fact that we are organizing here such a tournament is very important for Romanian tennis because we have the chance to grow and to compete against players from around the world. I believe we need this type of tournaments throughout the country, so we can see more and more juniors play. Only that way we can properly evolve. It’s a new beginning for me, I want to focus on Romanian tennis and create programs, build new and well organized opportunities because these children from Romania deserve this.”
During the Dr. Oetker Junior Trophy 2016 tournament there was also a section dedicated to the memory of Florenta Mihai. Florenta Mihai was the director of the Dr. Oetker Junior Trophy tournament from its debut in 2012 until last year, when a terrible illness claimed the life of this great lady of Romanian tennis.
In order to properly honor the life and career of Florenta Mihai, the Romanian Tennis Federation, along with partners Smart Corporation Group and Dr. Oetker Romania and with the help of “Agerpres” National Press Agency, organized a photography exhibition with notable players in Romanian Tennis. During the awards ceremony, player Mateo Bivol (France) was awarded the “Fair Play” honor, created in memory of Mrs. Florenta Mihai.
“I believe that Dr. Oetker Junior Trophy is the most important international tournament we have at this time. After talking with the participants from other countries and with their parents I can say that everybody had a good time and many have said that it was better organized than similar Grade 1 international tournaments that take place in Europe. Everything went great, the weather was also in our favor. We were hoping that one of our players wins, in order for them to benefit from the points gained but also for their confidence. We are very happy for Raluca, it is a very good result for her. This tournament was like our baby, it was a project we wanted very much to become a reality when we applied for it in 2011. We were extremely happy when Tennis Europe approved a Grade 1 tournament for Romania. We try to improve it year after year together with Dr. Oetker and Smart Corporation Group. This year we made it a special week not only from a sports point of view: we also had music, star guests, magicians, master chefs, under the motto “Enjoy life, love tennis”, declared Catalina Cristea, tournament director Dr. Oetker Junior Trophy.
Raluca Maria Tudorache won the Dr. Oetker Junior Trophy after beating Marta Custic (Spain) in the final with 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
“I am very happy I won Dr. Oetker Junior Trophy tournament. It was a wonderful week for me, I played well and the feeling was amazing. It was a very interesting experience to have the chance of playing against players from all countries, with different playing styles. I found the inner strength and ambition and managed to make a comeback in the final. My favorite player is Serena Williams who has an aggressive style that I hope to achieve one day. This is a very important tournament that Dr. Oetker and FRT organize, a helpful step for us towards great performance”, declared Raluca Maria Tudorache.
Romanian double comprised of Fatima Ingrid Amartha Keita and Ana Paraschiva Manea made their way to the final where they were supposed to play against the main favorites Marta Custic (Spain)/Daniella Dimitrova (Bulgaria). Unfortunately, Fatima injured herself during a singles game and the two abandoned without playing. The boys’ doubles was won by pair Viktor Jovic (Serbia)/H. Rune (Denmark), while the first place in the singles category was gained by A. Gaponenko from Israel.
The competition is supervised by the Tennis Europe Junior Committee, the regional association of the International Tennis Federation.
